  • WTF? Why are we building a convention center when we already have two?

    Mon Mar 31, 2008 at 03:43:12 PM

Councilman Mike Polensek seems to be the only one asking the obvious question: What are we gonna do with the convention centers we already have?

In their ongoing quest to blowtorch your wallet, then stomp it to death while doing Cherokee war cries, Cuyahoga County commissioners may have fashioned their worst deal yet to build a new convention center/medical mart in Cleveland. In an ongoing series, Ace Reporter Lisa Rab breaks down the absurdity of the deal for those of you scoring at home:

Councilman Mike Polensek is feeling a bit miffed these days. He has this crazy notion that since the new convention center is going to be built in Cleveland, the city should have some say in the deal. This is especially important, he notes in a recent letter to Council President Martin Sweeney, because, um… the city already has a convention center…

The convention mart deal is the kinda trough made for Jimmy Dimora

In their ongoing quest to blowtorch your wallet, then stomp it to death while doing Cherokee war cries, Cuyahoga County commissioners may have fashioned their worst deal yet to build a new convention center/medical mart in Cleveland. In an ongoing series, Ace Reporter Lisa Rab breaks down the absurdity of the deal for those of you scoring at home:

Whenever civic leaders want you to pick up the tab for a new project, they inevitably trot out claims that thousands of new jobs will be created. Remember Gateway, when they told us it would create 27,000 new jobs? Or how about the fabulous Euclid corridor project, where a miracle bus route is supposed to create 9,000 jobs? …

WTF?: 20 years later, Sam Miller finally gets his wish

Sam Miller, seen here doing his most villainous laugh.

Last week, we explained how the county commissioners were considering building the new convention center behind Tower City mall, on the banks of the Cuyahoga. Since the plan basically involves giving $1.3 billion of your money to a private developer, picking the most expensive site is critical to the project. That’s the beauty of wasting money the Cuyahoga County commissioners’ way! …

WTF? Convention centers are the VHS of civic investment ideas

    Tue Mar 25, 2008 at 03:02:58 PM

Commissioner Jimmy Dimora is investing $903 million in an industry that was down 40 percent before the depression. Fortunately, he's doing it with your money, not his.

Cleveland’s civic leaders, not being the most well-read bunch, have long been jonesing for a new convention center and medical mart as the miracle cure for the city’s economy. They envision thousands of people being shuttled from Hopkins to Tower City, sleeping a the Ritz, dining in our restaurants, and unloading monster coin in our fine selection of gentlemen’s clubs…

WTF? Funding the Medical Mart, Ken Lay style

    Mon Mar 24, 2008 at 03:43:02 PM

When told about the deal in an interview from Hell, Ken Lay let out a hearty chortle of admiration

In their ongoing quest to blowtorch your wallet, then stomp it to death while doing Cherokee war cries, Cuyahoga County commissioners may have fashioned their worst deal yet to build a new convention center/medical mart in Cleveland. In a new C-Notes series, Ace Reporter Lisa Rab breaks down the absurdity of the deal for those of you scoring at home:

The commissioners have promised to front an estimated $400 million in bonds to build the center. But Chicago’s Merchandise Mart Properties will be in charge of actually laying down the bricks and mortar, and when it’s done, the private company will own it.

Guess how it’s going to repay the construction loan? With more of your money! …
