You can’t believe that it’s more than 11 months until the next Cleveland Film Festival. And Superhero Movie just isn’t doing it for you (by the way, when exactly did spoof producers get too lazy to even come up with real titles for their movies?) You’re desperate for a dry documentary, or a tale of redemption set in a third-world country — you know, a film where the main character is named Maria de la Paz or Pierre. Well, calm those shakes, independent-film addict. There’s a cheap substitute less than an hour away. ...
The Akron Film Festival kicks off tomorrow at the Bang and Clatter Theatre (140 E. Market St., Akron, 330.606.5317) and lasts through the weekend. The five-feature, 34-short festival is shorter and has less movies by mostly lesser-known directors than the CIFF. But the price is right — it’s $6 for entry to one film, $10 for a whole night, and $24 for the entire festival. And if you really want to support unknown artists, this is the place to do it—this will be many of these filmmaker’s first festival.
Check out their film schedule here. There are a couple of local selections, like How Ohio Pulled it Off, a doc on election fraud, and On the Downlow, an exploration of being a bisexual man in the Cleveland African-American community. But I’m most intrigued by short Fish Arms. The film’s tag line: “Fish arms are really, really strong.” We found the above Youtube clip, which really confused more than enlightened us. Especially since we can’t even figure out whether it’s a trailer for the film, or the film itself. -- Gus Garcia-Roberts
