  • Persepolis creator Marjane Satrapi to speak at Case Western

    Thu Apr 03, 2008 at 02:23:02 PM

For all you Iranian ex-pats living in Cleveland, get ready. One of your greatest exports is coming to the city. Graphic novelist Marjane Satrapi will be at Case Western university tomorrow afternoon to give a free lecture.

Satrapi is the creator of the graphic-novel series Persepolis. It’s a coming-of-age story about a young Persian girl that somehow does not feel like a coming-of-a-story about a young Persian girl. The novels were adapted into a animated movie that was an Academy Award Nominee for Best Animated Feature Film. But, as usual, the novels are better. ...

For artsy fanboys, Satrapi is the greatest artist to come around since Joe Sacco and Craig Thompson. She’s able to show a side of Iran not normally revealed. Like how her grandmother puts jasmine petals in her bra every morning so she smells beautiful, and how owning an Iron Maiden tape is like owning a skeleton key to freedom.

Before this gets too sappy, here are the details: the free lecture begins at 4:30 p.m. CWRU’s Amasa Stone Chapel, 10940 Euclid Avenue. Seats are first come, first served. Get there early.

In related Iranian ex-pat art news: At 7:30 p.m. tomorrow, Cinematheque will screen Persepolis. Tickets are $8. – Bradley Campbell
