  • Picks of the Weekend: Keep running, man. There's beer in your future

    Fri Mar 14, 2008 at 12:31:06 PM

Every Friday, Scene calendar editor Cris Glaser provides a random but reliable sampling of things to do this weekend. For more options, log onto entertainment.clevescene.com. And check back Monday for C-Notes' Picks of the Week.

Friday: Here’s your chance to think Irish and protest the war all at once. Ireland’s Black 47 thrashes at the Beachland for a 9 p.m. show to promote its 12th CD, Iraq. As frontman Larry Kirwan tells it, the lyrics on all the disc’s songs come straight from e-mails and letters he’s received from American soldiers in the Middle East. Titles like “Downtown Baghdad Blues” should give you an idea what frame of mind the troops are in. The club is located at 15711 Waterloo Road. Tickets are $17 by calling 216-383-1124.

Saturday: Start your weekend extra early for the 23rd annual Saint Malachi Run. Last year, nearly 2,000 amateur athletes strapped on their tennis shoes and ran either a two- or five-mile course in a pre-Saint Paddy’s race to raise money for Saint Malachi Church at the top of the Flats’ West Bank. Then they all dashed over to McCarthy’s Ale House for a post-race beerfest. And don’t forget to wear your best green outfit as it’s so not cool not to. The 7:30 a.m. race starts at the church at 2459 Washington Avenue. The race fee is $25 by calling 216-623-9933 or visiting www.hermescleveland.com.

Sunday: Learn how to skin a deer, pan for gold, and build a campfire as experts from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Jungle Island Zoo will be on hand for the Cleveland Sport, Travel, and Outdoor Show at the I-X Center. You can also sit in on workshops that can help you fish for steelhead in Lake Erie, teach your dog to hunt, and gun down geese in your backyard. The show is open today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 6200 Riverside Drive. Tickets are $10.50 by calling 216-529-1300.
