First, her record company tried to make her a cooing sexpot. Then they tried to make her a beer-swilling hard-ass. Then they just threw their hands up in frustration and let her do what she wanted. After all, Lynne’s earned that right. She’d been making records for more than a decade when she won a Best New Artist Grammy in 2001…
Lynne’s latest album, Just a Little Lovin’, once again dips into the blue-eyed soul songbook, grabbing its style and songs from one of the best: Dusty Springfield. Lynne netted tons of comparisons to Springfield when I Am Shelby Lynne came out. Just a Little Lovin’ features cover songs made famous by Springfield. Lynne slips into something more comfortable and purrs perfectly throughout – even if it does come off as a tad hollow and shallow. No matter, Lynne’s a sultry performer, who’ll be in her element at Sunday’s Beachland show. --Michael Gallucci
