Purim is the Jews version of Halloween, with a little bit of St. Patrick’s Day spirit thrown in for good measure.
The holiday, which takes place on Thursday, commemorates the time when Persian Jews were almost killed off by the evil Haman, an anti-Semite who held some kind of important political post back in the days before genocide was frowned upon. Luckily, fate intervened the form of a beautiful woman named Esther, who was able to convince the king of Persia not to kill us...
On Thursday, Jews celebrate our non-annihilation by getting really, really drunk (not the St. Patrick's kind of drunk; we're talking two Miller Lites and a cherry bomb) and dressing in strange costumes. No one is quite sure the reason for this, except that it’s fun.
At 9 p.m., the Jewish Federation will be holding its second annual Purim Masquerade extravaganza at B-Side Lounge www.bsideliquorlounge.com. Guests are invited to come in costume, with prizes for the most creatively dressed. Soulico, a Tel-Aviv techno band, will perform. Tickets are $5. -- Rebecca Meiser
