  • A gentle proposal to Cleveland sports fans: Quit bitching and enjoy it

You know your slightly overweight and under-mannered but nonetheless charming friend who lands a smoking hot and incredibly un-bitchy girlfriend, but instead of counting his blessings counts the days until she wises up and leaves for someone hotter and richer and better endowed?

That’s the Cleveland sports fan. ...

The Indians haven’t even started their 2008 campaign – which many experts predict will lead them to a World Series – and all we can talk about is how CC won’t be back.

The Browns are apparently the trendy Super Bowl pick, and all Cleveland can talk about is a quarterback controversy. What’s the controversy with having a decent back-up when No. 1 blows out an ankle in the conference title game?

Then there’s LeBron – a once in a lifetime talent playing in our city, and all we want to talk about is when he’s skipping town.

Maybe he will, maybe he won’t. But there’s not a damn thing you – or Danny Ferry or Dan Gilbert, by the way -- can do about it. (Why does no one realize he could win titles and still skip town? Or not win any and stick around anyway?)

What we can do is enjoy him while he’s here. Instead of worrying about what kind of handshakes he gave to Jay-Z in New York the other night, or sweating over the Yankees-themed shoes that he wore for the game at Madison Square Garden, or interpreting his pride in putting on a show at the Garden as some sort of indication that he wants to play there as soon as possible, just chill. He flatly said in interviews after last night’s game http://www.ohio.com/sports/cavs/16375491.html that he’s happy playing here, and there’s no reason not to believe him at this point.

Sit back and enjoy the fact that he dropped 50 on the Knicks. Remember that he took a team of YMCA pick-up players to the Finals last year. And watch closely. Because if LeBron does bail on Cleveland after his contract is up, you’re going to want these memories. You’ll want to tell your kids every special thing he did on the court. And they surely won’t want to hear that you were too busy bitching to pay attention. – Vince Grzegorek
